Widely respected former teacher Jack Reid passes away

A WIDELY-respected PE teacher who coached generations of young rugby players and other athletes at Omagh Academy has died.

Jack Reid, who was also a former long-term sports columnist with the Tyrone Herald, passed away at Hillview Nursing Home in Omagh on Wednesday.

Originally from Castlecaufield, Mr Reid also worked in Dungannon and Cookstown but it is with the Omagh grammar school that he is most closely associated. He taught at Omagh Academy from the early ‘70s until his retirement in 2005.

Speaking in 2020 after he received a BEM for his services to sport, Mr Reid paid tribute to family saying, “They had to sacrifice a lot for me.”

Beloved husband of Zoe and much-loved father of Jane, Michael, Victoria and grandfather of Adam, Charlotte and Archie, a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Jack Reid will be held in First Omagh Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 1.30pm followed by cremation in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.
