Plans to build a total of 31 new social houses on the site of the former Omagh RUC station have taken a step forward with the start of demolition work at the site.
The Arbour Housing Association is contracted for the design and construction of 31 new properties at the site on the Mountjoy Road.
The former police station was closed in 2007 and has been lying vacant during the intervening 15 years.
It had been used as the town’s police station from 1957.
Recognising the pressing demand for social housing, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive is supporting this project.
Construction work has been underway for a number of months on new homes at the rear of the ex-police station site in Woodside Avenue.
This was previously Omagh Training Centre, and before that the site was occupied by the Omagh Workhouse and the Tyrone General Hospital.
The development includes a four-bedroom house, an assortment of three-bedroom and two-bedroom houses, a specialised three-bedroom wheelchair-accessible bungalow, and a collection of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.
