A rare Boxing Day off for Blues’ Clarke

BOXING Day is going to offer Matty Clarke something totally unique – a day off!

For the first time in seven years the Linfield fullback will not be playing football on St Stephen’s Day.

Last week’s announcement by the Northern Ireland Executive that all sport was going to be suspended for a week means that the entire Danske Bank Premiership programme of fixtures on December 26 has been postponed.

Linfield had been scheduled to host Big Two rivals Glentoran and while that is a game that Clarke and his team-mates would have relished he believes that given the year that’s in it that most Irish League footballers will appreciate a break over the festive period.

“I think a lot of players are like myself they’ll really appreciate the time off so they can spend it with family and friends,” he said.

“On a personal level I certainly will. Nearly two years ago my father passed away and there have been some dark days. It’s been a tough two years and it’ll be nice to take time out with the family.

“Normally I would be playing a game and then rushing home but this year will certainly be a lot different.”

The former Rangers player has been one of Linfield’s star performers this season and at 26 he’s still possesses the hunger and desire to add to his three Premiership, two Co Antrim Shield, Irish Cup and League Cup medals he has won since joining the Blues in 2013.
