CASTLEDERG United produced the one major shock in the first round of the Mulhern Cup on Saturday by defeating top flight opponents Enniskillen Athletic 4-2 at Mitchell Park.
A splendid brace by Adam Clarke and goals by Jamie Finlay and Toriagh Nicholas sent the Division One side packing to set up an All-Division Three clash with Augher Stars who defeated second tier opponents Lisnaskea.
United took a two-goal lead and, despite Athletic fighting back to level, the Derg man kicked on to record an impressive victory. Club captain James Harpur was delighted how his players had performed.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better start,” said Harpur.
“ We managed the game well and weathered the storm from Athletic to limit them to long range efforts. I couldn’t of asked for any more effort from any of the players. We really showed what our side is capable of going forward.”
While shocks were few and far between on Saturday, there were a number of near misses.
Tummery Athletic mounted a late comeback to defeat Derrychara United 3-2 in extra-time while Enniskillen Town also needed added time to see off Dergview Reserves by a similar scoreline after goals by Timmy Crompton and Dylan Aiken had cancelled out strikes by Frank Wallace and Gary Stewart before Ethan Beresford nicked a winner.
