Johnston and Solberg win Junior European title

FINTONA’S Aaron Johnston was ‘absolutely delighted’ to be crowned Junior European Rally champion alongside driver Oliver Solberg on Saturday.

The pair finished fourth overall at Rally Islas Canarias to clinch the junior title by 11 points from Gregoire Munster, but they missed out on the overall crown to Alexey Lukyanuk by just nine points in the end.

“We are absolutely delighted to have achieved what we have, to become Junior champions, but at the same time we were looking towards the overall as well,” Johnston said.
“It just wasn’t meant to be, but overall we’re very, very happy.”

Johnston very nearly achieved a European double at the weekend by lifting the co-driver’s crown, but he missed out by just four points to Dimitry Eremeev, who was dropped for the final round by Lukyanuk following an error in Hungary.
