Tommy Canning’s charges were crowned North West Senior Cup champions for the first time by coming from two goals down to defeat Limavady United 3-2 at the Limavady Showgrounds.

A Ryan Doherty free kick and a superbly-crafted goal by Dean Brown had the Roesiders in the driving seat at the half-time interval.

Dergview though turned the tables in spectacular fashion in the second half after centre-back Keenan Diver scored moments after the restart.

Man of the match Matty Kirk then equalised with a well-placed header shortly after the hour mark and Dergview completed their sensational comeback victory with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Kirk turned provider to send Jamie Browne clear and the young attacker steered the ball expertly past the advancing United keeper.

Afterwards a delighted Canning said the winning of the North West Senior Cup was a seminal moment for the Darragh Park club.

“It’s groundbreaking fo the club, it’s what we have talked about this week,” he said.

“This group of boys have broken new ground and it’s setting the standard for those who are coming after them.

“It was a massive second half performance. I felt we had the lion’s share of possession in the first half but the quality wasn’t there in the final third.

“We rectified things and got a terrific response in the second half. We scored early and momentum is everything in football. There are young lads out there who have never played a game of senior football. I think we got what we deserved in the end.”

The win comes 18 months after the Castlederg club was defeated on penalties in the 2019 showpiece final at Ballinamallard.

En route to this year’s final the Derg side defeated Maiden City and Coleraine.
