Dunamanagh rider returns to clinch Ulster win

ADAM Ward clinched his first Ulster Elite Road Race Championship title in Aughnacloy on Sunday when he pipped Nathan Mullan to the line by barely the width of a tyre.

The Dunamanagh man had only returned to these shores after a summer racing in Spain for Antiga Casa Bellsolà Club Ciclista and in France with the Ireland under-23 team, which concluded last week following the gruelling 10-day Tour de l’Avenir.

The 20-year-old certainly had plenty of recent race practice to draw upon on Sunday, all of which was needed to clinch the win, but he admits that while delighted with his success, his legs certainly weren’t as fresh as he would have liked them to have been for an Ulster Championship showdown.

“All week I was in a bit of a box, I was real fatigued after 10 days of racing against professional word tour riders and future Tour de France winners!,” admitted the former Omagh Wheeler.
