THIS reporter suggested to Dunbreen Rovers manager Paddy McNulty that it had been a very long time since two Dunbreen Rovers players had scored hat-tricks apiece in the one game.
To that question of sorts, McNulty replied, “It’s been a long time since two Dunbreen Rovers players had scored hat-tricks.”
Either way it’s been a long time!
On Saturday Niall McCaffrey and Brian Sally registered three-hits apiece as the in-form Omagh side defeated their Enniskillen counterparts 8-0 at Youth Sport Omagh.
Sally netted twice before the interval to help Dunbreen establish a 4-0 lead at the break and completed his personal tally shortly after the resumption of the second period.
By then McCaffrey had scored once but went on to match Sally’s contribution either side of a goal by Mark McCaffrey.
The best goal of the bunch was Rovers opener after three minutes when Eimhin Cunninghan showed great feet in darting forward from the halfway line and cutting inside to beat Mark Gaffney at his near post.
McNulty said Rovers took their cue from Cunningham’s early strike.
“That set the tone and we played some great football.”
The victory leaves Dunbreen just four points off the summit, having played the same number of games as league leaders Castlederg United.
In the last month Rovers appear to have turned something of a corner but McNulty has dismissed any talk of promotion or winning titles.
“A few weeks ago we had a good talk at training,” he continued.
“We had a few poor results early in the season and we told the players to stop putting themselves under pressure.
“We laboured the point that football was about enjoyment and that that hour and a half on a Saturday was a release from every day life.
“There is a more relaxed approach and their ability is shining through. There will be no talk here of anything other than going out to enjoy playing football. There is more of a club focus at Dunbreen this season rather than focusing on a particular team. The reserves are top of thier league and the thirds are joint second.”
McNulty placed on record his thanks for the support from Niall McDaid and Marty Quinn.”
