RECENT years have seen a notable growth in popularity for the sport of cyclocross and the increasing participation in it will be evident at the latest cyclo provincial meet this weekend.
Hundreds of competitors and spectators from U-6 right up to adult will converge on Ecclesville Park for the latest round of the Ulster Cyclocross League this Sunday.
It’s being hosted by Omagh Wheelers and promises to be another enjoyable day of action and excitement. The sport is a cross between road and cross-country cycling and is seen by many as the ideal environment for development.
“This cyclocross element of cycling has grown in the past five years and Ecclesville is recognised as one of the best facilities and events in the country. It really has everything, with a good course, carparking and facilities,” he said.
“It has been really received over the years and the spectator element is really good because you can see the majority of the race from various viewpoints.
“There is a great spectacle and a different set of skills from road cycling. Another big advantage is it’s on a losed route with no cars of other vehicles and if you fall off you’re falling onto grass or mud and not a road.
“Over the past few years the numbers of road-racing have declined somewhat and people are tending to opt for cyclocross in the winter or mountain-biking. A round of the World Cup will be held in Dublin this December which further highlights the increasing popularity and investment in cyclocross.”
In addition to the main races, there will also be a ‘have-a-go session for the children taken by Gary Donaldson.
This is seen s great option for children to gain confidence on the bike in a safe / off-road environment and looks set to contribute richly to what should be an entertaining and busy day of activity.
“There is a great atmosphere at this and there will be competitors from all over the north and down south,” added Stephen McKenna.
“Riders will be coming from as far as Dundalk and Dublin. Those taking part can gain points which will be valid for the country-wide league. People travel quite a bit to the events.
“Omagh Wheelers will have a large volunteer presence and officials will be there to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Other local clubs, including Termon Wheelers, Fintona CC and Caldwell Cycles will also be chipping in.
“Each year is getting better and better, and the role of this event in terms of getting children and their families out an about is very important as well.”
