Friday night’s alright for Dergview and Dungannon

DERGVIEW and Dungannon Swifts both recorded eye-catching victories in the Lough 41 Championship and Danske Bank Premiership respectively last evening.

The Derg men denied Newry City the opportunity to go top of the Championship with a surprise 2-1 win against Darren Mullan’s promotion chasers at The Showgrounds.

All the goals came in the first half. Benny Igiehon and Cathal Farren had the visitors two up after 32 minutes and City’s only response came on the stroke of half-time through James Feelan.

Meanwhile, Feelan’s previous club Dungannon ran out 2-0 winners over Carrick Rangers with Ryan Mayse grabbing both goals.

Mayse had Swifts one up at the break. Following a quick counter attack, Darragh McBrien threaded a superb ball into the attacker’s path and the Newtown man took one touch before blasting home from just inside the area.

The second came in the dying embers of the game and again on the counter attack. Joe McCready hooked the ball forward for Mayse to scamper clear, round goalkeeper Neil Shields and roll it into an empty net.

Swifts’ second win of the season lifts Dean Shiels’ team out of the bottom two while Dergview are up to eighth in the Championship.
