HOTSHOT Robbie McDaid was the toast of East Belfast last night after the Omagh man scored a dramatic extra-time winner to secure the Irish Cup for Glentoran.
With just six minutes of overtime remaining the former Leeds United player swooped to steer home a Ciaran O’Connor pass and break Ballymena United hearts.
The Glens had lead through a 21st minute strike by Paul O’Neill but United deservedly equalised when Cathair Friel glanced home a header just two minutes into the second half.
Thereafter it was nip and tuck all the way until McDaid produced a moment of magic to send the cup back to the Oval for the first time in five years.
Glentoran have played and defeated Ballymena United four times this season and McDaid has scored in every game. Last night’s winner was his fifth against the Braidmen and his sixth in this season’s Irish Cup.
