IF Dergview supporters are searching for an omen that might suggest their team could pull off the unthinkable on Saturday and defeat Premiership big-hitters Glentoran in the Irish Cup then look no further than July 21, 2012.
For it was on that day that, against all the odds, a Tyrone team defeated the mighty Manchester United in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup tournament.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the famed youth tournament some of the games were hosted by the six county teams and Dergview’s Darragh Park was selected as the venue to host the clash between Tyrone and the next generation of Old Trafford superstars and favourites to win the international competition outright.
The young Red Hands though forgot to read the script and 31 minutes into the game Jamie Glackin, now a regular in the Coleraine team, let fly to send the ball arrowing into the roof of the United net from all of 25 yards.
The county boys then sealed a 2-0 victory when Cathal McShane, who last year won the All Ireland Championship with Tyrone, volleyed home a second to hammer the final nail in the Red Devils’ coffin.
A number of players, including McShane, in that team went on to pull on a Dergview shirt and Tyrone’s manager on that historic and momentous day was none other than Tommy Canning, the current Darragh Park boss!
