Ivan Sproule says that if his Dergview team causes a massive upset by defeating Ballymena United on Tuesday evening to reach the semi-finals of the Irish Cup it will be the greatest achievement in the club’s 41-year history.
The Derg outfit reached the quarter-finals of the premier cup competition for the first time by defeating St James’ Swifts 2-0 at Ferney Park on Saturday thanks to two goals by striker Sean McCarron.
That victory combined with Ballymena’s 5-0 win over the PSNI has, according to Sproule, set up a David-versus-Goliath last-eight tie at the Ballymena showgrounds.
While admitting that his team is facing the proverbial mountain to climb, the former Hibs star said he would be telling his players to embrace the challenge.
“It’s a mountain for us to climb with the squad we have got and the injuries that are mounting up,” he said.
“Everyone loves a David-and-Goliath and we’ll certainly be David on Tuesday night.
“We are going to have to dig deep but listen Dergview is Dergview, we’ll give it a go. We always give it a go.”
