SHOULD everything go to plan this weekend, Fintona’s Aaron Johnston will be celebrating winning not one but two European titles.
As things stand, Johnston and Oliver Solberg need to finish in the top five of the European Rally Championship’s junior standings to win that particular title and should they win the event overall then the likelyhood is they will be crowned European champions in the process.
At present, Solberg trails Alexey Lukyanuk by 27 points in th overall standings, which leaves the 19-year-old needing victory outright and hoping his Russian opponent fares less well, while in the Junior competition, Johnston and his Norwegian team-mate trail Gregoire Munster by one point before dropped scores come into play.
“It’s winner takes all really, so hopefully we get a good clean run with no punctures and no protests!” said 25-year-old Johnston prior to his trip to Gran Canaria.
