Local duo bidding for cup glory

TWO local footballers will be going head to head this evening (Friday) in a bid for Irish Cup glory.

Omagh’s Robbie McDaid and Adam Lecky, from Castlederg, will line out for Glentoran and Ballymena United respectively in local football’s showpiece decider at The National Stadium.

 For McDaid, who scored Glentoran’s equaliser and who was denied by the woodwork in the semi-final win over Cliftonville, it will be a first major domestic final since signing for the Glens back in 2017.

He said, “The club have been synonymous with the Irish Cup and the fans crave it. They demand a good cup run every year, it’s nearly expected that Glentoran get to the final. Obviously it hasn’t been like that in the last couple of years, thankfully now we have given them something to shout about.”

Lecky, meanwhile, will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky for him since joining the Sky Blues. The former Dergview and Ballinamallard player was on the losing side when Ballymena were defeated 1-0 by Linfield in the 2018 BetMcLean Cup Final and earlier this season he picked up another losers’ medal in the County Antrim Shield Final after Cliftonville produced a sensational smash and grab to win 2-1.

He said, ” Friday has the makings of a good final and because of how Glentoran play it’ll probably be a more open game than the semi-final was. I’m really looking forward to it, it’s set up to be a cracker.”
