Local pair miss out on final

AS expected Ardstraw and Strabane Athletic both missed out on reaching the final of the Northern Ireland Intermediate League Cup following the final round of fixtures on Saturday.

Ardstraw went down 3-2 to Dungiven at Spamount Playing Fields while Strabane were 2-1 victors over Trojans at the Brandywell.

That victory still wasn’t enough to secure a place in next week’s showpiece for Liam McMenamin’s side.

Strabane lost just one of their six qualifying games however drawn matches against Maiden City, Dungiven and most recently Ardstraw proved their downfall.

On Saturday goals by Declan Sharkey and Tom Carlin helped Athletic sign off with a victory to finish third in the final table.

A Dylan Aiken strike and an own goal kept Ardstraw in the hunt however it was Dungiven who advanced to the decider thanks to an Oran Armstrong double and a goal from Keelan Smyth. They will play Newbuildings United in the final.
