NEXT year will see Strabane Sigersons GAA Club celebrate the silver jubillee of its ground, Páirc Mhíc Sioghair.
On May 5th, 1996, Strabane Sigersons played host to Newtownstewart in the Intermediate Reserve & Senior League in the very first games ever played at Páirc Mhíc Sioghair.
For years Strabane teams had played on council pitches and many Sigersons members will remember the many great memories in Melmount, Melvin and Roundhill to name a few.
The project of purchasing the land and building the grounds to the standard they are now has been a tough but a very enjoyable time for the club.
The facilities in the Ballycolman, where the talented Strabane players get to showcase their abilities, are often remarked on by visiting clubs as some of the finest in Ulster and Ireland.
Over the years Sigersons have expanded the grounds, work that was not possible without the people of Strabane.
“Everytime we have run club draws the people have supported us,” said a club spokesperson.
“Any function we have had, the people supported us and when the GAA season is up and going there is no finer sight that looking at the hill on a Sunday afternoon and seeing the people of Strabane cheering on the boys in blue!
“Finally, to the volunteers who made this possible, your dedication, work rate and ambition was and is immense. Everyone involved should be extremely proud of what they are part of.
“Over the years we have lost many friends, Gaels and volunteers but the one sure thing is that their memory will live in Páirc Mhíc Sioghair forever.
“Those involved can always say I was part of making Strabane Sigersons what it is for many people… Home!”
