Skipper Sorcha stars in Minor Ladies win over Saffrons

Antrim 2-6  Tyrone 1-10

SORCHA Gormley led from  the front as her Tyrone side staged a late rally at the Dub to secure an opening tier one Minor Championship victory over Antrim on Wednesday night. The Tyrone captain scored 1-6 of her side’s tally as they showed real character to see off the battling Saffrons who had led by a point at the break.

The visitors were slow to get started and found themselves two down in the early stages with points from Cliodhna Logan and Hannah Donaghy. When they did get going skipper Gormley added a quick fire 1-2 that nudged the Red Hands ahead, only for Keala McAllister to raise a green flag for Antrim to level things again.

A brace from Meadbh Gallagher had Antrim ahead narrowly at the break.

Tyrone came strong in the third quarter scoring six unanswered points with Gormley, Aioife Quinn, Emma Murphy and a well worked team score finished off by the excellent Caitlin Crozier putting them four up. Indeed it could have been more. The visitors tested the woodwork from a spot kick and saw another goal chance called back for a free.

Antrim did hit a purple patch as the game swung toward the final ten minutes. The impressive Logan eventually broke that streak, with points either side of a stunning Saffron goal from Hannah Donaghy.

Both teams had chances but a converted free from Logan had the Saffrons in front heading to the closing stages. There was still time for more drama.

Tyrone dug deep. Gormley dropped over a score before an excellent long distance free from Catherine Moohan gave them the lead. The Red Hands controlled the remainder of the game seeing off a couple of Antrim attacks to secure the victory.

Tyrone Scorers: Sorcha Gormley1-6 , Emma Murphy, Catlin Crozier, Catherine Moohan and Aoife Quinn 0-1 each.

Tyrone welcome Armagh this weekend. The Orchard side visit on the back of a single point loss to Cavan. In last week’s other tier one game Donegal had a big victory over Monaghan.
