Stafford returns to Ferney Park

FORMER skipper Mark Stafford has returned to hometown club Ballinamallard United.

Stafford, 34, has returned to Ferney Park following a brief spell at Glenavon who the defender joined after six largely successful seasons at Linfield.

During his time at Windsor Park, Stafford won four Premiership title medals, enjoyed Irish Cup success and represented the club in Europe.

But it seems his Premiership race is run and he’s now looking forward to helping the Mallards continue their bid for promotion.

“I’m very excited to be back at Ballinamallard United,” he said.

“Although I have been away for a few years I kept in close contact with many around the club and a close watch of their results and performances every week. My brother continues to be a dedicated Mallards supporter.

“I’m well aware that I will be going into a changing room with different personnel, both players and staff. I know I will have to earn their respect and confidence.

“I wouldn’t be coming back if I didn’t think I had something to offer the club. I have a focus for the Mallards and hope I can help them again to push for promotion to the Premiership.”

It goes without saying that Ducks boss Harry McConkey is delighted that Stafford is back where it all started for him.

The centre-back is expected to train on Thursday night and he’s likely to be included in the squad that will travel to Ballyclare Comrades on Saturday.

“I’m delighted to secure the services of former skipper Mark Stafford,” said McConkey.

“He will give the squad another natural leader in the changing room and on the pitch. He is very experienced and a quality central defender.

“I know from both our talks last summer and more recently that Mark is still hungry for success. He is determined to give the Mallards his very best as we enter the run in of a very competitive season.”
