Strabane aiming for more cup glory

THE local season may be drawing to a close but there’s still plenty to play for starting today (Friday) with both the Senior and Sammy Jeffrey finals.

While most of the media spotlight will be on the clash between Eglinton and Brigade, for Tyrone fans, it’s Strabane Park which will dominate their attention as the hosts take on Glendermott.

Aaron Gillespie’s side have already tasted success this year after securing the Eric Cooke Cup, but are keen for more glory in the prestigious competition. It won’t be easy against an in-form Glendermott side, who have really shown their quality in recent weeks, especially with overseas professional Nauman Anwar who has dominated attacks across the region.

“We are all very much looking forward to it, and it’s great to be able to end the season by getting to play in a final,” said Gillespie.

“It’s one we would really like to win as a club, because it’s a cup competition we’ve only played in once before. This time we’ve a chance to win it for the first time so to be able to do that then it would top off a good season for the club.

“We’re bringing in a lot of confidence as our cup form this season has been very good and coming off the back of a win we’re in a good place. It’s going to be a very competitive game as we know that they play hard and have some dangerous players that can take the game away from you so it should be an even contest over the two days.”
