Stute awarded controversial penalty as Dergview held at Brandywell

A HIGHLY- controversial penalty denied Dergview the opportunity to record a fourth straight victory against north west neighbours Institute at Brandywell this afternoon.

Just shy of the hour mark visiting keeper Alan Buchanan rushed from his goal to collect a low cross from the right.

The Derg net-minder appeared to gather the ball just before he was challenged by Stute midfielder Brendan McLaughlin but to the utter amazement of most supporters referee Dairmuid Harrigan immediately pointed to the spot.

Following the protestations of the visiting players, McLaughlin dusted himself down and duly converted to ultimately earn Stute a share of the spoils.

The home side had trailed at the interval after Derg striker Benny Igiehon fired the visitors into the lead after Stute keeper John Connolly dropped an Adam Buchanan cross after colliding with one of his own defenders.

Shortly after Cathal Farren somehow side-footed wide of a gaping goal as Dergview looked to build on their early advantage.

Either side of the break Stute came more into the game and after Brian Donaghey’s team equalised McLaughlin spurned two excellent opportunities to fire his team ahead.

But in the final exchanges Dergview looked the more likely as Jamie Browne and Pat Loughery both failed to hit the target when well placed to win the game.
