The end of St Julians’ Road explained

The desecration and ultimate eradication of the former St Julian’s Road football grounds was and still is a bitter pill to swallow for followers of the beautiful game locally.

And with some justification. How could a venue that at one time boasted one of the best playing surfaces in the Irish League be allowed to fall into rack and ruin to the point that its destruction was inevitable?

Almost from the very day and hour that Omagh Town folded in June 2005 there has has been a blame game and much finger pointing at who was responsible for allowing what was a Irish League standard venue to be erased from the town landscape.

That’s one of the many reasons why this reporter recently requested information on the discussions around St Julian’s in an attempt to make some sense of it all rather than speculating further on who did what and where it had all went wrong from a footballing perspective.

And I’m grateful to Fermanagh and Omagh District Council for providing the minute extracts of meetings that took place between July 2006 until October 2019. They made for interesting reading.
