Title double sealed by Chadwick family

FATHER and daughter, Adrian and Makenna Chadwick picked up a title apiece at the UK and Ireland Field Archery Championships in New Ross, County Wexford, over the weekend.

Over the course of two days, in stifling heat, the Drumquin Archery Club pair proved a step above the rest in their classes as Adrian claimed the bow hunter recurve veteran male crown and Makenna the young adult female title.

“It was fantastic, a really challenging weekend with the travel down and the heat and with it being the UK and Irish champs, it’s never going to be easy!,” said Adrian.

“It was baking hot, it touched 29 on the first day of practice, and there was a good field of archers from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland, all the top archers trying to compete for their respective titles.”

For Makenna, who is a former junior world champion and reigning European Indoor title holder, she stamped her authority on the young adult class by breaking two UK records on her way to the giold medal.

The 19-year-old extended the field and hunter marks in the category by around 40 points from 137 and 139 respectively, which shows the dominance she enjoyed over the weekend.

“Her shooting is going from strength-to-strength,” Adrian beamed.

“She’s shooting really well, she took the championship title and broke the two previous records so it establishes that while the class might not be the strongest, the fact she’s breaking previous records puts her stamp on it!”

This season may be Makenna’s last at young adult. She may make the step up to the adult ranks next year, which won’t prove a big step for the talented teenager, who is already shooting over the same distances.

Before then, she will compete in the Northern Ireland Bow Hunter Championships in September, which will all but conclude the outdoor season.

Then, next year, the Chadwicks will compete in the World Indoor Championships, which will take place just outside London in 2023 when Makenna will attempt to add the global crown to her continental success from 2020 in Lisburn.
