Torrens reflects on stunning double at Dublin Festival

SIMON Torrens enjoyed the best win of his career so far on Saturday at the Dublin Racing Festival and then a short time later he surpassed that to complete a remarkable double on the saddle.

The Castlederg native won the Grade B Matheson Handicap Chase on the JP McManus-owned A Wave of the Sea before doubling up in Leopardstown’s Grade B Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle aboard Drop The Anchor for the same owner on his debut for trainer Joseph Patrick O’Brien.

“That is by far the biggest double I’ve had,” beamed the former Omagh Academy pupil. “The first one was the biggest race I’ve won in my career for prizemoney and that and then I broke that because the second one was the biggest I’ve won. One was worth 100,000 Euros and the other 125,000, so it was great.”

While delighted with his achievement and by his form this season, Torrens was quick to pay credit to his agent, Garry Cribben, who has been key to his progress as a jockey.
