DESPITE wracking up a twenty point win over Mayo last weekend in Division Four of the Camogie League Tyrone manager Paul O’Grady still wants more from his new charges.
The Mayo man who played at inter county hurling level took over the reins of the Red Hand camogs this season and his new side showed no mercy for his native county last weekend in Tattyreagh. However he still expects improvement as their campaign gathers steam.
“Of course I am happy with the win. It’s great to get off to a winning start but I would have been happier with another five or six points on the scoreboard. We made errors that we must improve on.”
The win last week was built on some outstanding backline play. Siobhan Donnelly and Bronagh Barker were excellent while a potent attacking unit, spearheaded by Lara Devlin, Roisin McErlean and Cara Little, hit 3-15 between them as Tyrone ran out convincing winners.
This Saturday Tyrone welcome Wicklow to Omagh and Paul is delighted that the players have really stepped up to what he is expecting of them with over twenty four players out training regularly
“ The girls have bought into what we are doing but we have been training on a 4G and maybe not being on grass was an issue against Mayo. We were a bit sluggish and made a few errors. That’s something they will have to shake off as we progress.”
O’Grady, who guided Omagh to a first Tyrone adult hurling title in fifty years last year, is backed in his role by Niall Donnelly, Ger Fox and Liam Flannigan. The new management has brought a new level of professionalism to the set-up.
“We have a standard that we have brought into the role and that’s important. The players get fed after training and have gear. It’s important that they come along as a team, looking like a team, all those things are key for bringing a team together.
“ I am delighted the players are doing what we have asked of them. They seem to be enjoying it as much as we are.”
Focused on league points again this weekend they face a Wicklow side who eased to a 2-17 to 0-2 opening day win against Louth. Saturday’s game should certainly prove a big test for Tyrone but O’Grady has lofty amibtions.
“ We have targets and I want to see us go all the way in all competitions.
“We have the quality players, there’s a lot of young players coming through and we are going the right direction.”
