No plans for return of traffic wardens to Fintona

THE Department for Infrastructure (DFI) said it has no plans to reintroduce traffic wardens to Fintona, unless there are further complaints about poor parking in the town.

A number of fixed penalty charge notices were issued to motorists who parked in contravention of restrictions in Fintona last November.

The Department for Infrastructure confirmed that the traffic warden visit to Fintona on November 30 followed a complaint from a local business.

“They requested a traffic warden to be sent to the town to enforce the restrictions which were in place,” an official from DFI told Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.

“Their claim was that people living on the Main Street, and some traders, were abusing the timed parking restrictions on the street.”

However, Sinn Féin councillor for the area, Stephen McCann, said he had been contacted by a number of businesses expressing concern at the re-emergence of traffic wardens in Fintona.

“It has been a number of years since traffic wardens last were in the town and the timing of their return raised some eyebrows,” he said.

“It is accepted that they have an important role to play.

“But the coronavirus is having a very significant impact on the business community and there is a fear among businesses that they could lose passing trade if the wardens were to return.”
