There comes a time in your career where you’re stuck in a rut at work and things can start feeling more than a little monotonous. Maybe you’ve outgrown your role, and you’ve gotten as much out of it as you can, or perhaps you’ve outgrown the company all together.
Either way the only one that can make a change is you.
So perhaps it’s time to get some recognition and bag yourself that promotion that is sure to make your every day life more exciting. That means it’s time to take charge of your career and start to impress your boss more.
Here’s our top tips sure to bag you that promotion or an extremely glowing reference.
Research the role you want
There’s no point in putting yourself forward for a promotion or looking into a new role with a different company, if you aren’t sure what sort of role you want.
What are the role requirements and how do you meet them? What skills will you contribute to the position and how will you be an asset to the company in the new position? Prepare the answers to these questions and you’ll be well prepared for a meeting with your boss.
Keep Improving & Show Initiative
Being very good at your job goes without saying, it’s essential to give your all during work, and it’s also vital that you show that you can do your best when left to your own devices.
Showing initiative means finding new ways to improve your role, your department or the company as a whole. Write these down, draft up a few proposals and present them to your boss.
Get Advice From Other Professionals
Don’t be afraid to approach those in your role, or those in the roles you have your eye on. This doesn’t have to be in the company you work for but can be in another company if you wish.
Not everyone will be open to sharing the secrets to their success but most people will be really flattered that you consider them an inspiration and will be more than willing to help.
Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or strike up a conversation with others in your office or in your field. You never know what it may lead to.
Educate Yourself
When you’ve been in a job for a few years, or even a few months, it’s easy to settle into things and get a bit complacent.
If you want to step up your career then better yourself and challenge yourself constantly.
Sign up for some courses, learn some new skills and get some extra training or study in. Some companies even provide training courses for free.
It’s not always easy to find the time and you may have to make a few sacrifices, but when you reap the rewards you’ll be so glad you did it.
Don’t do the bare minimum
There are those who literally only come to work so that they can collect their pay check at the end of the month, don’t be one of those people. You’re boss will pick up on your attitude, and realise that you’re only there because you have to be and not because you want to be. Employees who aren’t flexible to the needs of the company and who are unwilling to participate are employer’s pet peeves.
Nominate yourself when help is needed
What you must remember is that your boss has a business to run and this requires a great deal of time and effort.
Therefore when they ask for help with something, or voice the fact that they need a task to be completed, be the first to volunteer.
This shows that you’re ready for more responsibilities and will certainly work in your favour, when the time comes for a promotion.
Power dressing
Power dressing is all about dressing to feel strong and confident and dressing for the job you want. You should be clean and polished at all times.
Don’t be afraid to put you’re own twist on it either, a small stamp of individuality will make you stand out.
Sell yourself
Talking about yourself can be daunting and a little embarrassing. It can be hard to do it without feeling like you’re boasting or gloating. Keep a record of your strengths and achievements each day, anything from how much you wrote, to how many sales to how much of that big presentation you worked your way through.
