Hogan Cup finalists support Marie Curie

The Gaelic footballers from Omagh’s CBS will be thinking of others by supporting Marie Curie just before their Hogan Cup final clash on St Patrick’s Day.

The team donned the famous Marie Curie Daffodil pin ahead of the school’s Big Breakfast tomorrow (Friday), where a collection will be held for the end-of-life charity.

The big yellow collection buckets will also be out in force on the coach as the team and their supporters travel to Croke Park in Dublin.

Team captain Eoin McElholm (18) explained why the team and the school were supporting the well-known charity, which provides nursing care for terminally-ill people at home.

“I don’t think you would have to go too far even in our school before you would find a student or a teacher or another staff member whose family members have not been cared for by the Marie Curie nursing service,” he said.

“Just because we are young doesn’t mean to say that we haven’t been touched by terminal illness in our families, whether it’s from grandparents, parents or aunties and uncles.

“We are helping to raise money for Marie Curie as it’s the right thing to do.”

The school’s Head Prefect, Caolan O’Hagan, also 18, agreed and pupils were delighted to raise money for the charity.

Caolan said, “Our school has a long and proud tradition of supporting local charities which do such good work in our community and we are delighted to have this opportunity once again to raise funds for Marie Curie for its annual Great Daffodil Appeal.”

Sheena Havlin, Marie Curie’s community fundraiser for Omagh, added, “Christian Brothers has been a steadfast supporter of Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal down through the years, holding many a collection in the school and volunteering to do street collections.

“We are delighted to learn of the school’s success in getting to the Hogan Cup final and thank the football team for their kindness in supporting our Great Daffodil Appeal.”

Sheena also asked the local public to support its street collection in Omagh on March 25 by buying a Marie Curie daffodil
pin.
