Hundreds expected to take part in Gortin run and walk

EXCITEMENT is mounting ahead of this weekend’s Gortin 5 Mile Road Race and 5km Walk & Run.

Hundreds of runners and walkers are expected to take part in the event, which offers a competitive five-mile chipped race and a more relaxed 5km option. Both races begin at 11am on Saturday at the entrance of St Patrick’s Primary School, finishing at Owenkillew Community Centre.

The scenic course promises a fast, flat route surrounded by the stunning hills and valleys of the Sperrins – ideal for personal bests or simply soaking up the atmosphere.

Race committee member and local runner Steve Turner said, “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to the Gortin Five. Whether you’re chasing a PB or just want to enjoy the run, this course has something for everyone.

“It’s been a real team effort to bring this event together, and we hope it becomes a permanent fixture on the athletics calendar. The local community and businesses are excited to host what promises to be a fantastic day.”

Post-race refreshments and a BBQ will be available for all competitors, with thanks extended to the many sponsors, especially the main sponsor Omexom.

Entry fees are £12 for the five-mile race and £8 for the 5km, with chip timing included. The first 200 registered runners in the five-mile race will receive a race t-shirt, while all 5km finishers will receive a medal.

Early registration is encouraged at www.coretiming.ie.
