AS the fallout from Jürgen Klopp’s seismic decision to quit as Liverpool manager still reverberates, one Scouse-born Strabane man has given his thoughts on the news which has devastated many Kopites at home and abroad.
Proud Scouser Shaun Amo Hamilton, living in Strabane for over a decade was, like many, shocked by an interview which appeared on the LFC TV channel last Friday morning where Liverpool manager Klopp Mnutlined his reasons for stepping down at the end of this season after eight years. He had guided his team to everything the domestic game has to offer, including a Champions League title, World Club Championship and a Super Cup.
“I was actually driving when I heard the news on the radio; it caused a few swerves I can tell you!” Shaun said. “I honestly haven’t gotten over it yet and I don’t think my son Logan has either – it feels like getting dumped to be honest.
“As someone who’s been a life-long Liverpool fan, I can honestly say he’s been the best manager since I’ve been supporting the club.”
Over Klopp’s tenure there have been numerous ups and precious few downs. Asked what he feels Jürgen has brought to the club and the highlights, Shaun offered, “Klopp’s personality is just wonderful; a perfect fit for the city and the club. He wasn’t scared of any team and instilled that in the players. His style of play could be considered a little ‘chaotic’ I know, he would rather win 4-3 than 1-0, but that was the ‘rock and roll’ football and it worked.”
Replacement
The question on everyone’s lips now is: Who is going to replace Klopp?
“It genuinely feels like, whoever takes the job, things just won’t be the same if I’m honest. Xabi Alonso is the bookies favourite but he’s had half a good season at Leverkusen and I think he lacks the experience. The papers are also saying Ange Postecoglu at Spurs would be good but again, not for me. I think that if Stevie Gerard came back from the Middle East he would be a great fit, but my choice would be Graham Potter…
“I would love to see us lift the league title this year, seal Klopp’s legacy. I think we just have to try and enjoy the next few months with Klopp at the helm and worry about a new manager afterwards, although I’m hoping Jürgen has a change of heart!”
