Anyone who has ever been to a show by comedic songstress, Emer T Maguire, will be familiar with the Strabane woman’s hilarious brand of musical stylings involving subjects as diverse as her own medical history, growing up in the ‘90s, relationships and stage fright.
However, a fan favourite at many at her shows is the song, ‘Girls Night’, and as it has proven so popular, Emer has released it as her first single.
A rap-based track, ‘Girls Night’ sees Emer deconstruct the players and scenarios which arise out of the maelstrom when a group of ladies get together.
Speaking to the Tyrone Herald this week, Emer explained, “I wrote the song about a year ago, inspired by a night away with a big group of girls for a friend’s birthday.
“It struck me how every girl’s night usually has the same characters in their group; the mum, who rarely gets out and goes a bit mad when unleashed, the newly-single friend who tries to get pictures with all the men to make her ex jealous, and then the one who always slides off early and is in her bed with a pizza when the rest of us are desperately trying to get a taxi home. I came straight home after the party, and immediately wrote the song about these characters which, I’ll admit, I based on friends.
“And thought, ‘This’ll be a cracker.’”
Since then, Emer has been playing ‘Girls Night’ on her set regularly.
“Usually on stage armed with her trusty guitar or piano, ‘Girls Night’ presented Emer with a rap challenge, one she rose to with confidence.
“I’m not used to being without my guitar on stage, but I felt good about rapping. I love rap music anyway, so it was nice to try something new for a change.”
The song blew up, with many people asking where they could download it but Emer didn’t have an answer.
However the popularity of the song forced her hand.
“I wasn’t thinking about putting this, or any of my songs, out as a single, but I put the song on Tik Tok a few days ago and it went viral – fast! There were so many comments, likes and shares, not to mention hundreds of messages asking me where they can get the song, so that made my mind up. I edited the song and put it on Spotify, Amazon and Apple Music and now ‘Girls Night’ is out there for all to enjoy.”
The song has gone down a storm on all platforms and Emer is ecstatic with the response. Are there any plans to release more of her tunes?
“Maybe,” Emer admitted. “I’m in the middle of a tour with Paddy Raff at the minute so time is limited but, depending on how ‘Girls Night’ does; I may edit and release a few more, like a wee mini album.”
– ‘Girls Night’ is available for download on Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music.
