Strabane panto group to make ‘Cinderella story’ return

Four years after its last performance, the St Pat’s Hall community panto is set to make a triumphant return, bringing back a local tradition that has delighted audiences for over four decades.

The chosen production, the iconic ‘Cinderella,’ boasts a cast of over sixty performers, a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, all eager to revive the magic on stage. Directed and choreographed by Emmett Stewart, accompanied by musical director Ryan Quinn, the production promises to be a spectacular event.

Taking time out from the ongoing rehearsals, Emmett Stewart, the enthusiastic director, expressed his delight at being chosen for this role, calling it a ‘dream come true.’

He shared his personal connection to the panto, stating, “I’ve been going to the panto in St Pat’s Hall for as long as I can remember, and one of my first on-stage experiences was actually in the panto, so I’ve always loved them. I feel extremely honoured that Brian and the committee for St Pat’s asked me to take on the mantle, which I was only too happy to do. Also, Cinderella is something of a ‘bucket list’ show for me, and I love working on it.”

The casting process, which saw a mix of old hands and new blood, received an overwhelming response from the community. Emmett mentioned, “We put out a public call and were inundated with people eager to take part, ranging in age from 11 to 50 years old. The panto isn’t affiliated with any of the wonderful theatre groups we have in the area, which meant that it was open to join; that said, we are blessed with cast members who do come from the groups as well. It’s a lovely mix of the old and the new.”

The cast includes familiar faces such as Stephen McGonagle and Damien Walters, seasoned performers playing the roles of the ugly sisters, and Jason Barr, who returns to take on the role of Buttons. Among the new additions are Aoife Farmer as Cinderella, Jamie-Lee Gallagher as Prince Charming, Dara Bradley as Dandini, and Dearbhla Cairns as the Fairy Godmother.

Rehearsals are well underway, with the ensemble working ‘flat out’ to deliver a captivating performance. Regarding any nerves, Emmett confidently stated, “Honestly, no. We’re fortunate to have people who have breathed and lived this panto for decades, so everyone is confident and raring to go.

“St Pat’s panto is a highlight in the local calendar, and people have missed it; it’s lovely that we can bring it back and go through what we all experienced for decades.”

Tickets for ‘Cinderella’ are currently on sale at St Pat’s Hall, priced at £10.

The panto is scheduled to run from January 30 to February 3, with a matinee on the final day. The community eagerly anticipates the return of this beloved tradition, promising a magical experience for both young and old. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this enchanting journey down memory lane.
