Things change

And just like that it’s all coming to an ending of sorts. But also a beginning. What happened this week exactly? Was it real or was it a dream?

It all began with a road trip to Phoenix. This wasn’t planned at all. But the groom needed to pick up the denim tuxedo from Levi’s tailor. So I went along with him for the ride. A productive journey… on the way there we wrote a movie. And on the way back to the desert we decided how many houses we would own in various places around the world.

It all seems very doable. A ten year plan.

Then later on, me and the guru met up with the American songbook in the finest Mexican restaurant in the dead of night where we dined like kings. Some tunes were skimmed over before calling it a night.

From here on it gets a little foggy. I have no idea what happened over the next few days.

Well… Everything happened, but I can’t think of any single part of it. It all merges together like a dream. But there was a lot of music. And a lot of people. And lots of Mexican food. And coffee. And tequila.

Seeds were planted and things that should have taken months to plan came naturally together in seconds. Recording. Writing. Playing gigs. Watching gigs. Writing movies. Planning futures. Making friends and allies.

I fell in with a group of horror movie enthusiasts who took me under their wing. I learned a lot from my fellow nerds. They were half my age but they taught me things about myself I didn’t know. I have my homework cut out for me. Now we have three movies planned to make together. At one point there was talk of driving 15 hours to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre house. We nearly did it too, but logic and sanity prevailed and we stayed put in the dive bar.

And somewhere in the middle of it all there was a wedding. I talked with people I remember seeing on television from a bygone era. And The karate kids came out of retirement for two performances in a back yard. Dreams came true. Literally. Things I’d dreamed the night before unfolded into reality right before my eyes the next day. It was a vortex of magic and mystery. And a little dab of mayhem. It’s true that time stood still and the clock did not exist. This isn’t half of it. The last day felt like dust settling after a storm, and the entire town became night of the living dead.

We sat in silence for a day just absorbing it all… It may take a long time to adjust back to normality and for a lot of things to sink in. Maybe five years. Maybe less. The final morning was filled with sad goodbyes that were actually happy hellos, and then one more cup of coffee for the road.

The groom ran me to the airport and we solidified all future plans. There are many. We threw in an extra few future adventures to the mix, including a cruise and another movie. Because why not. It felt like I was leaving home. This was a life check. A time to take stock and ask what the hell does anything even mean.

None of this makes a bit of sense. It never does. And now I’m on a plane headed homeward while the guru heads to the North Pole, both of us mid air, headed in opposite directions. And the party will not stop. Whatever happened out there in the desert will continue for decades, as the world becomes smaller and time fades away.
