POLICE in Omagh are investigating a reported ‘ambush robbery’ when a cyclist was attacked in the early hours of the morning.
The incident happened near Cranny Bridge around 1.30am on Monday.
A man in his 40s was cycling when he was ambushed by a group of six individuals dressed in dark clothing with hoods covering their faces.
The man attended hospital where he received staples to wounds to both his arm and leg.
PSNI Detective Constable McKenna outlined, “One of the people in the group punched him in the face, and he was then set upon by the group. He was further punched and kicked, before his wallet, containing a substantial sum of cash, was taken from his pocket.
“The group then made off in the direction of the public toilets.
“This was a nasty assault, which had the potential to result in more serious injuries.
“Enquiries are ongoing, and anyone with relevant information, including dashcam, CCTV or other video footage, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting 97 of 19/02/24.”
Omagh town councillor, Errol Thompson, condemned those who perpetrated the attack and has wished the victim a speedy recovery.
Cllr Thompson said, “This was an horrendous incident, and is very worrying for local people.
“The area is a very popular place for families to walk their dogs. I condemn the people that perpetrated this very violent attack, and would ask anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at this time to come forward and engage with police.”
