LOUGHMACRORY’S beautiful ‘Lough Walk’ was a hive of fundraising activity at the weekend, as local people took to the glistening lands around the famous lake to donate to an important cause.
Indeed, the ‘Lough Walk Collection’, hosted by the Loughmacrory Development Association in conjunction with Loch Mhic Ruairi Noamh Treasa GAA and Loughmacrory GAA Handball, garnered a fantastic response by local people, all keen to help raise money for essential lough maintenance and repair funds.
Monies raised from the collection will also be used to improve safety and security measures about the lough, for community facilities, including toilets; and to replace a local bridge.
Speaking after the successful event, which took place on both Saturday and Sunday, local MLA Declan McAleer was full of praise to everyone who donated. “There was a great response to the collection at the weekend,” Declan said.
“I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who contributed so generously.
“All funds collected will be invested in the maintenance and upkeep of the Lough Walk and community facilities.
“Some of the things that will be prioritised in the medium-term are: Toilet provision; security; replacing another bridge; as well as ongoing daily maintenance.
“The vast majority of labour – and by this I mean, thousands of hours – is freely given by dedicated volunteers.
“But the cost of materials, public liability insurance and professional fees all adds up, and the community have to raise this through this bucket collection and other initiatives.”
Declan continued, “I’d like to add a further word of thanks to the members of Loughmacrory Community Development Association; Loch Mhic Ruairí Naomh Treasa GAA; and Loughmacrory GAA Handball Club.
