THE Irish Government has agreed this evening to move the Republic to the highest level of Covid-19 restrictions from midnight on Wednesday – but the GAA’s intercounty championships have been granted an exemption from the new limitations.
Under the ‘level five’ rules, non-essential retail outlets and hairdressers will have to shut up shop, while people will only be permitted to exercise within 5km of their home.
Schools and creches remain open and it’s been determined that the GAA intercounty season will continue, albeit behind closed doors, as was the case in the weekend’s national league matches.
There were fears that underage matches at intercounty level would be postponed, but they too are exempt from the new restrictions. That means that the Tyrone U-17s will be allowed to play their Ulster Championship quarter-final against Donegal on Saturday afternoon at Ballybofey.
