LOCAL fundraiser, Liam McHugh, is organising a 60th birthday like no other as he prepares to meet a number of key personal milestones in the coming weeks.
The Spamount man, whose fundraising efforts for cystic fibrosis have earned him respect and admiration far beyond Tyrone, is now preparing to overcome three significant challenges on the first weekend of October.
First he will celebrate that 60th birthday; the second will see him once again complete the London Marathon, and Liam is hoping that the third will see his fundraising reach the brilliant target of £300,000 since he began 29 years ago.
Liam’s efforts over the past three decades have been inspired by his daughter Rachel, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in 1992. The approval of the transformative drug, Kaftrio last year has dramatically enhanced the lives of so many with cystic fibrisis and the £300,000 milestone is one which Liam is especially anxious to reach.
“Since I began fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis in 1992 I’ve reached the grand total of about £293,000, so there’s just the £7,000 or so to go before I get to the magical £300,000,” he told the UH.
Birthday celebrations and marathon runs aside, Liam’s main aim is to raise money for research into new drugs and treatments to make life better for those with cystic fibrosis.
Liam, who is an ambassador for cystic fibrosis, is hoping as many people as possible will donate during the next five weeks to help him reach the total.
