Nabka anniversary to be marked in Strabane

STRABANE’s pro-Palestine collective, Strabane Are Palestine (SAP) are to mark 76 years since the Nabka, at a gathering at the Tinnies on Wednesday.

The Nabka, or ‘catastrophe’ refers to the events of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948 where Arabs were subjected to violent displacement and ethnic cleansing, leading to a loss of lives, homes, land and belongings. The term is also used to refer to what many see as the ongoing persecution and displacement of Arabs by the Israeli state.

A spokesperson for SAP commented, “The Nakba of 1948 was not the end of Palestinian suffering. For almost eight months we have watched another Nakba unfolding, and are asking people to turn up on Wednesday May 15 at 7.30pm to remember the first Nakba.

“It is imperative that while the people of Strabane continue to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people that our local elected representatives do all that they can to help end the
ongoing genocide of Palestinians.”

The spokesperson also urged locals to be wary of where their produce comes from as a means of boycotting goods associated with Israel.

They continued, “Not only are we asking people to attend on Wednesday, but we are also asking people to keep boycotting Israeli goods and corporations that help maintain the Israeli regime.

“We would urge people to check where produce is made or packaged, and to refer to the global ‘Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign’ online for more information if they want a list of companies which do business with or are located within Israel.”
