New application for Melmount Post Office finally confirmed

A POST OFFICE branch in Strabane, which has been sorely missed since its closure in 2022, could be set to make a welcome return as a potential applicant for the business was confirmed by the Post Office.

The branch on the Melmount Road, which was located in a shop on Beechmount Avenue, abruptly ceased trading in September 2022 after the shop closed, leaving residents on the Melmount side of Strabane without the much-needed facility.

However, a spokesperson for the Post Office this week confirmed that there is an interested party for the site.

They said, “We have an interested applicant for Melmount Road Post Office.

“Their application is currently progressing through the necessary stages.

“We will confirm more detail when we know that the application has been approved.”

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Orfhlaith Begley has been working with party colleague Cllr Paul Boggs in an attempt to expedite the return of the service and is hopeful of an imminent decision

She commented, “The service been badly missed by the local community since its closure in September 2022 and we have been urging the Post Office to do all it can to ensure the branch re-opens in the area.

“In the latest update we have received, we have been advised that the application to take on the contract is now in its final stage of consideration and that a decision and hopefully a positive announcement will be forthcoming shortly.”
