Omagh High hosts Valentine’s Day darts tournament

LAST week saw the return of the second annual Omagh High School Valentine’s Day Darts Tournament with 16 students and staff going head-to-head in a bid to win the highly coveted Marshall Trophy.

The event was organised entirely by the Sixth Form pupils, with Jeremy Marshall at the forefront of the operation, having organised a similar event last year which was a roaring success, and greatly supported by staff and pupils alike.

Alongside Jeremy, Ashiq Vinod was the scorer, Adam Loughlin was the DJ – providing music for each competitors unique walk-on – and Alex Edwards-Schewiso was compère.

Head of the PE Department, Mr Rennie, was the lucky winner of the trophy, having taken on Year 13 pupil, Ben McCrea, in what was a close finale.

McCrea, who was a valiant runner-up, took on some huge scalps along the way to the final, and wowed the crowd with his high-octane walk-on entrances.

Other staff participants in the tournament included Mr Duffy, Mr Clarke and Mr Thompson, with 12 Sixth Form pupils in total competing.

Speaking with the TyroneHerald about the event, Head of Sixth Form, Mr Duffy, said, “It is absolutely fantastic to have garnered so much interest in a darts tournament held in the gallery of the school with a wide range of competitors, staff and pupils likes all getting into the spirit of the game and having great fun at the same time.

“A huge congratulations has to go to Jeremy Marshall, who worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the event – he is a fantastic ambassador to the school.

“Well done also to Mr Rennie, our Head of the PE Department, who was the overall winner – a brilliant performance all round.

“Finally, a big thank you to all those who competed and to those who came out to support the event.

“We could not have done it without you.”

The annual darts tournament is now a tradition at Omagh High School, and is set to return next year with 16 brand new competitor competing yet again for the Marshall Trophy.
