A COMPANY whose premises at Killeeshil have been blamed for a serious stink in the area is now seeking planning permission for an extension.
Northway Mushrooms on the Aughnagar Road has applied for planning permission for a new bale storage area and other facilities at its site.
However, the issue of the smell has reportedly been affecting the local community for five years, resulting in local people becoming increasingly frustrated whilst sports sessions and other events are being curtailed at the local St Mary’s GAA club and community centre.
Cabragh Concerned Residents Association has said it is ‘disgusted but not surprised’ at the proposed development. The association has said that its concerns over the smell are being ignored.
Scores of people from the Killeeshil area have submitted objections to the development at the company’s premises, the deadline for objections ended on Monday, April 29.
In March, several hundred people attended a protest against the stink at the Northway Mushrooms site, urging the company to address the issue.
“Again we ask Northway Mushroom Company to immediately stop exposing our youth members, adult members, coaches and all in our community to this horrendous stink. Please put measures in place to stop the odour,” the club said.
Mid-Ulster Council will now have the task of deciding on the expansion plans by Northway Mushrooms.
A report contained within the application says that it should not be rejected on the grounds of the odour coming from the premises. The comment is contained within the document produced by Irwin Carr consultants on the noise and odour impact of the proposal by Northway Mushrooms.
