Suspect charged with murder of Tyrone man Damien Heagney

A MAN has been charged with the murder of Damien Heagney from Dunamore.

The 39-year-old suspect had been questioned by detectives from the PSNI’s Major investigation unit at Antrim police station.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, a PSNI spokesperson said, “A 39 year old man has been charged with murder. He is due to appear at Strabane Magistrates Court on Thursday, October 13. As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”

Mr Heagney’s remains were recovered from Cappagh Reservoir on August 10 after searches by specialist officers, police divers and dogs.

He had been reported missing a few weeks previously, but had not been seen since the end of 2021. He was last seen in the Dromore area in the early hours of December 31. Searches later took place at three locations in Tyrone, including McGartland Terrace in Dromore and also in Cookstown.
