Tyrone and St Enda’s legend Thady Turbett passes away

FORMER Tyrone and St Enda’s goalkeeper Thady Turbett has died at the age of 92.

Turbett had a long and successful playing career from the forties through to the sixties and was in goals when Tyrone won their first Ulster senior titles in 1956 and 1957. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of his generation.

As a fresh-faced 18 year old, Turbett was Omagh St Enda’s goalkeeper when they won their historic first ever Tyrone Senior Championship title in 1948.

Remarkably, he was still involved 15 years later when he won his sixth senior championship medal with the club in 1963.

Thady also won two Tyrone minor championship titles, two Ulster Senior championship titles with Tyrone, three Railway Cups, one McKenna Cup, one Gael Linn Cup and two Lagan Cups. He also represented Ireland in 1954 and 1958.

Despite being unwell, Turbett was recently joined by family and friends at the opening of the county’s first exclusively gaelic games cafe, Caife 32 which is located at O’Neill’s Healy Park in Omagh.
