Tyrone pays tribute to victims of Creeslough tragedy

Messages of sympathy and solidarity have come from across Tyrone for the victims and those affected by the tragedy at a filling station in Creeshlough, Co Donegal.

Ten people are now confirmed to have died after a huge explosion at the petrol station. Eight people are in hospital in Letterkenny, seven are in a stable condition while one man has been transferred to Dublin for specialist burns’ treatment.

The explosion happened at an Applegreen service station in the village of Creeslough yesterday (Friday) afternoon. Gardaí said their information pointed towards a tragic accident at this point. Emergency services believe that all the missing people have now been accounted for and none remain at the scene of the explosion.

A vigil will be held in solidarity with the victims and all those affected, at Ann Street in Dungannon tomorrow (Sunday) at 1pm.

On Monday night in Strabane there will be a Solidarity Prayer Service at the Grotto, Townsend Street at 7.30pm.

A minute silence is also being held before GAA club championship games in Tyrone and across Ulster this weekend.

Comedian Emer Maguire has cancelled her show at the Alley Theatre in Strabane tonight as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives in the terrible tragedy.

Politicians and public representatives have also sent messages of sympathy.

First Minister in waiting, Michelle O’Neill stated, “My heart is absolutely broken for the people who have lost their lives, their families and the community of Donegal, following yesterday’s devastating tragedy at Creeslough.

I want to give my best wishes to those receiving treatment in hospital, and pray that you all make a full recovery soon. You’re in the thoughts of everyone across the island, and the country mourns with you during this very sad time”.

Ms O’Neill also paid tribute to the emergency service from the south, and their colleagues in the north, who took part in the rescue mission
