Walking all over cancer in March

WITH the sun at their backs and a spring in their step, a wealth of local families and friends are looking forward to – quite literally – walking all over cancer this March.

That is because the intrepid exercisers are taking part in Cancer Research UK’s upcoming ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ event, which challenges participants to complete more than 10,000 steps per day, while raising money for the charity.

Emma-Jayne Fowler can’t wait to begin the sponsored event as she says it will give her ‘something positive to focus her sights on’ – and she has urged everyone who is enthused by the great outdoors to consider signing up, too.

“So many of us have loved ones who have been affected by cancer, and we would love to play our part to raise vital funds for life-saving research,” she said. “This is never been more important than now, as Cancer Research UK have been badly affected with Covid-19.”

From lockdowns to isolation and the Covid-19 pandemic affecting everyone, committing to a 10,000 step target each day will have clear mental and physical benefits for all participants. Indeed, moderate exercise can help build stamina, burn excess calories and protect against a range of diseases, including cancer.

“Whether it’s walking to work, clocking a few more steps at lunchtime, or heading out for some exercise in the evening, every step helps towards meeting our daily targets,” Emma-Jayne described. “We hope that others in our Omagh community will go the distance with us by signing up to Walk All Over Cancer and raising money to help beat cancer.”

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research.

Cancer survival has doubled since the early 1970s, and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress – but every step our doctors, nurses and scientists take relies on donations from the public and the tireless fundraising of our supporters.

Everyone who takes part in March’s sponsored ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ event will be making a real difference to the 25 people diagnosed with cancer every day in the North.
