THE champagne corks were popping at Vaughan’s Holm on Saturday after Ardstraw were presented with the Enda Love Memorial Cup for winning Division Two of the Fermanagh and Western League.
The north Tyrone outfit wrapped up their league campaign with a 3-2 victory over Omagh Hospitals. That meant that Andy Patterson’s side finished their campaign with 40 points, four more than runners-up Augher Stars.
Saturday’s victory brought the curtain down on a hugely successful league season during which ‘Straw won 13 of their 16 games and lost just twice.
Two seasons ago the club took the decision to step back from intermediate football to return to the Fermanagh and Western League.
Manager Patterson said that by securing a place back in the top flight the club had been vindicated for making that move.
“At the time, it was a big call to be dropping down but it has proved to be the right decision, we have progressed as a unit,” he said.
“We’re back in Division One. We have a pile of youngsters coming through who can make this level.
“We’ll have plenty to pick from next year development wise, but, listen, fair play to the lads they got over the line.”
On Saturday, all the goals were scored in the second half. Craig McSweeney fired the Hossies in front but goals by Kyle Mitchell, Morgan Patterson and Paul Fusco turned the tables for the champions. A late own goal didn’t spoil the party which no doubt lasted long into the wee hours.
Patterson said he would let the players savour the moment, have a couple of weeks off before planning for the return to Division One.
“We’re looking forward to Division One next season. The lads have been exceptional all season and we look forward to next season; here we come. The hard work starts in a couple of weeks, we have a diverse bunch of lads, from 17-year-olds to 36. They have been fantastic.
“I also want to thank my backroom staff, Willie, Ivan and all the guys. Roll on next season, we keep going.”
