Armstrong unveiled as driver for new Codemasters team

JON Armstrong had been installed as one of the Junior World Rally Championship favourites before his 2021 season launch video had stopped playing.

The 26-year-old Kesh native was unveiled as a driver for the newly formed Codemasters DiRT Rally Team on Monday evening, with Phil Hall announced as his co-driver.

The pair will make their competitive debut together for the team at the opening round of the Junior WRC later this month in Croatia when Jon will turn many months of hard work behind the scenes into reality.

“I’ve been working on this since June or July last year, so it’s great that it’s finally come together because it’s been a lot of work,” beamed Jon, who works as a developer on the DiRT Rally game series for Codemasters.

He continued: “It’s great to have the backing of a company like Codemasters. It’s taken a while to convince them but I think now they can see the benefit of it and as the season goes on, they will really see this is something they should be doing.

“Hopefully they enjoy it and get the content they want out of it to use on their own Social Media.

“It makes sense for the best rally game developer to be associated with the real sport, so we’ll see how it goes but I’m hoping they will really, really enjoy it and we can keep the ball rolling for a few years.

“At the minute we’re definitely just focused on the Junior WRC this year so it’s down to me to do a good job and leave them with no excuse not to continue!”

Armstrong was due to contest the 2020 Junior WRC campaign, but a heavy crash at the opening round in Sweden and the Covid-19 pandemic put paid to those plans, so he’s thrilled to get a second bite at the cherry and on a familiar surface to start with.

“We’re just looking forward to getting back behind the wheel now and getting back into the flow of things,” the 2018 eSports World Rally Championship explained.
