Bready’s Conor flies out to join Ireland squad

BREADY pace bowler, Conor Olphert was added to the Ireland men’s squad ahead of the concluding ODI series fixtures with the UAE in Abu Dhabi.

 

The 24-year-old and all-rounder, Shane Getkate were drafted in to provide cover for both the squad’s batting and bowling stocks after David Delany suffered an injury.

 

Olphert, who will join his ex clubmate, Craig Young, and Warriors colleague Andy McBrine in the Emirate state, made his inter-provincial debut for North West Warriors in September against Leinster Lightning, taking two wickets. 

 

He is uncapped at international level and has been brought in as a net bowler for the Irish side, given the need due to COVID-19 protocols. 

 

Conor is the son of Mark Olphert, who made an appearance for Ireland in 1998 against a touring Australia ‘A’ side, and he admits the call-up has come as something as a surprise.

 

“To be honest, I’m completely shocked,” he exclaimed. “I really appreciate the opportunity to go out to the UAE. 

 

“It’s not something I’d ever thought I’d get a chance to do, so I’m determined to make the most of the opportunity. I can’t wait to get out there and meet up with the squad.”

 

Getkate and Olphert have arrived in Abu Dhabi and will now quarantine for three days. They have both tested negative prior to, and on arrival.

 

In the first ODI between Ireland and the UAE, an unbeaten Paul Stirling century – his second in consecutive ODI innings – proved in vain as the UAE claimed a maiden victory as a Full Member thanks to a successful run chase.
