Dead-eyed Jake secures Red Medal

A TALENTED young Castlederg darts player hasn’t allowed Covid restrictions to hinder his remarkable progress in his favourite sport.

Jake Sproule, 15, was recently awarded a Red Medal after hitting certain targets while playing on-line during lockdown.

Jake, whose love of darts began when playing with his family, has been a member of the Carrickfergus Junior Darts Academy – the only one of it’s kind in Northern Ireland – since January 2020 and in a short time there has made rapid progress.

He’s the only club member to have been awarded a Red Medal and this year he has set his sights securing a Black Medal which is the highest award for junior members.

While people in general have been struggling to fill their time during lockdown, Jake, whose favourite players are Dutchman Michael Van Gerwen and Scot Gary Anderson, has had no such problems.

At one stage the gifted teenager was throwing for three to four hours a day although that has been curtailed considerably since the resumption of school lessons and working on the family farm.

While the young Derg lad is dedicated to practising at home he’s looking forward to returning to the darts academy as soon as its safe to do so.
