Leonard proves himself to be one of the best in the World

LEONARD Dunn has been one of the ‘banger’ racers to beat in Northern Ireland for several years, but on Saturday he proved himself a match for the best in the world.

At the Speedworth World Finals in Ipswich, the 35 year-old Dunamanagh man finished third behind his team-mate, winner Sid Madgwick and runner-up Jack Tuffen in his E class Mercedes.

It was quite the performance from the Tyrone man, who has won the last four Northern Ireland points titles in a row.
Dunn started sixth on the grid of 58 drivers in Saturday’s World Final, which took place over 20 exhausting laps.

“I was well happy with third!,” he beamed. “I got a grid position of sixth, which wasn’t too bad to start with and then finishing third was good.”

With most of the ‘banger’ meetings in Northern Ireland postponed due to Covid-19 during 2020, Leonard has competed more in England this year, including a team championship last January alongside Madgwick and Jack
Overy among others.

And he will be back in action alongside that crew in January in Kings Lynn for the first team meeting of 2021 where, given the strength of their squad, success will be sought.

“It was a good experience racing alongside those boys, who have been racing a long time,” he added.

“There was three of our team in the top four [of the World Final], so we must be doing something right!”
